Can someone ever perform a truly altruistic act?

Say for instance that person A sees person B drowning in a lake. Realizing that person B has no hope of surviving without help, he leaps in and drags him out of the water. Can we say that A acted completely selflessly? Or is there always some element of self-interest involved in even the noblest altruistic act?

I think anonymous donations to say a charitable organization would classify. I mean yes the person might feel better about him/herself, but doing it anonymously kind of takes away the possibility of expecting anything back in return.

But what about people who believe in G-d or karma?

Hopefully one of those people who donate anonymously doesn't Very Happy I would suspect there has to be one person out of however many donate anonymously don't believe in him or believe in Karma, like myself Very Happy Though admittedly I haven't really made any contributions of note.
